2016 is shaping up to be the year of the comic book movie, but horror is not going down without a fight. There have already been a few pretty great horror films in theaters like The Boy, The Forest and the newly released The 5th Wave starring Chloe Grace Moretz, but the best horror films for this year are yet to come.We here at Terror Threads are excited for what is just around the cinematic corner, there are sequels, prequels and brand new series starting. Here are a few movies on the way to theaters in 2016 that are worth marking your calendars for.
Rob Zombie is releasing his 7th full length feature- 31. There will be a lot of familiar faces in the film like his beautiful wife Sheri Moon Zombie. Joining Mrs. Zombie in this tale of abduction and torture are Elizabeth Daily, Malcolm McDowell, Meg Foster and more Zombie film regulars. There have been limited showings to Zombie’s inner circle, but no mass release date has been set.
The Amityville franchise is getting another installment added to the already lengthy list of films with Amityville: The Awakening. The film stars Jennifer Jason Leigh (who stole the show in Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, The Hateful 8), Bella Thorne, Cameron Monaghan and Kurtwood Smith (yes, Red Forman). Amityville: The Awakening is about a single mother that moves into a haunted house with her kids, and of course, she is completely unaware of the house’s gory history. The movie hits theaters on April 1st.
In 2013, horror fans everywhere fell in love with The Conjuring, well hello sequel! The immensely talented Vera Farmiga returns as world renowned demonologist Lorraine Warren. Joining the Bates Motel actress are Patrick Wilson, Frank Potente, Maria Doyle Kennedy and Sterling Jerins. The Conjuring 2 hits theaters on June 10th.
Kevin Smith is taking another crack at the horror genre with a follow up to Tusk- Yoga Hosers. He will star in the film opposite Johnny Depp, Austin Butler, Haley Joel Osment, Natasha Layonne, Harley Quinn Smith, Lily-Rose Depp, Tyler Posey, Justin Long, Jason Mewes and Adam Brody. Harley and Lily-Rose play a pair of teenage yoga enthusiasts that team up with a bounty hunter to stop an evil presence that is harshing their party plans.
The upcoming film that may be the most anticipated has to be the third installment to the Purge franchise- The Purge 3: Election Year. The first two films were phenomenal (the second offered a bit more than the first, but they were both pretty awesome), and the third film is shaping up to be even more epic than the last. From the trailer release, it looks as though it is going to be a bit of a combination of the previous films, starting out in the assumed safety of a dwelling only to be forced out onto the streets to fend off those that would love nothing more than to “purge” anyone else they run into from the face of the earth. The masks are even more brutal looking in Election Year than the other films. They have evolved from creepy, doll-like masks to some seriously scary patriotic symbols. The skeletal Betsy Ross and the Statue of Liberty with glowing stitches are enough to send shivers down the most hardcore horror fan’s spine. The cast is pretty impressive too; Frank Grillo (The Purge: Anarchy) returns joined by Elizabeth Mitchell and Mykelti Williamson (Bubba from Forrest Gump). The Purge 3: Election Year hits theaters at a very fitting time for the storyline (July 4th weekend)- July 1st.
We don’t know about you guys, but we think this list is pretty exciting (and this is just the tip of the upcoming horror iceberg). Be sure to pick up some awesome horror t-shirts from the “shop” section of TerrorThreads.com so your outfit choice for the night is as epic as the movie on the screen.
